Feeds

Feeds are not new to the Internet. They have been around for a long time. But in the past several years the makers of software and operating systems have made them more accessible and easier to use.

To put it simply a 'Feed' (or RSS) is located on a web site (like this one) and has the sole purpose of providing information in a standard format to any computer that can access it. A full explanation of feeds and the history of feeds can be found on Wikipedia by clicking on this link.

Once you use your computer to subscribe to a 'feed' whenever it is updated, so are you. It saves you the time and effort of going back again and again to find out if there were additions  to the site your are following.

Depending on how old you are a great example of a 'feed' is the stock market ticker. It was a small machine connected directly to the stock market that spit out a continuous small strip of paper. It was the way people used to get immediate updates on the stock market

So the next question is "How much to is cost to subscribe to a feed?" The short (and only) answer is nothing. 'Feeds' are free.
